Two Color Knitting Portuguese Style

This class is for people that know how to purl and knit using the Portuguese Style of Knitting and want to take that knowledge to the next level by ‘Portuguesing’ with two colors.

In Portuguese style knitting the yarn is tensioned around a knitting pin on your shoulder or around your neck. Stitches are created by a flick of your thumb making this an easy way to knit without stressing your hands or wrists.

In this class students will learn:

• Portuguese knitting – a quick review

• Several ways of using two colors with one Portuguese Pin

• How to position and set up a Second Portuguese Pin

• How to work stranded knitting using two Portuguese Pins

• How to make hat or dishcloth using techniques learned in class

Class Details

Minimum Age: 12 years

Skills Required: Know how to cast on, bind off, knit, and purl, also know the (or did know) the basics of Portuguese style knitting

Materials Fee, paid to instructor: $6 if you want a Portuguese style pin

Students should bring:

  • 2 or more different colors of basic worsted weight yarn (no novelty yarn)

  • 16” circular needles in a size appropriate for your yarn

  • Paper for taking notes

  • Pen or Pencil

  • Stitch markers appropriate for your needles

  • Scissors

  • Yarn needle

about Mary Jo Harris

Mary Jo Harris lives in Madison, WI. She has been a teacher all of her adult life and has formally taught knitting at various Sheep and Wool Festivals, Fiber Festivals, Knit-In’s throughout the Midwest, and for the Oregon School System, Madison College, Olbrich Botanical Gardens, Wisconsin Craft Market, and Sunset Yarn.

Over 10 years ago, she added Chair Caning classes to her teaching repertoire and has taught local classes in addition to classes at places like the WI Sheep and Wool Festival, Iowa Sheep and Wool Festival, Shepherd’s Harvest, Missouri Fiber Retreat, and Michigan Fiber Festival. Under her designer’s name of Jo Harris, Mary Jo designs knitting patterns and has written a book entitled “Double Knitting - Inside Out.”

A member of the Madison (WI) Knitters’ Guild, Mary Jo loves any opportunity to discuss anything and everything knitting or caning related.
